Prompt: What is a human right, and how were Frederick Douglass' human rights violated? Provide examples from the book.

A human right is a right that is a permanent essential to all humans. Frederick Douglass’ human rights were violated. The main human right that was violated was that he was a slave. Slavery goes against human rights. In the book there are so many examples of torture one of them being “Upon this he rushed at me with the fierceness of a trigger, tore off my clothes, and lashed me till he had worn out his switches, cutting me so savagely as to leave the marks visible for a long time after.” This was just one example of torture which is also a violation of human rights. Douglass was also deprived of education and it is a right to receive education. Douglass was actually able to take grasp of a learning opportunity but he wasn’t actually allowed to be receiving the lessons which makes it a violation to human rights because he should have a choice to be able to learn. As you can see Frederick Douglass was deprived of many human rights. The list of human right he had violated is much longer, but those were the main ones.

Prompt: Discuss the use of sound devices (alliteration, consonance, assonance, rhyming) in one of the poems in your sub-genre reader. In the poem "A Poison Tree" from the Romanticism era, there is a lot of examples of rhyming.  The rhyme scheme was AABB stanza (4 times). The poem seemed very happy because of the rhyming. It seemed like a happy poem but it was actually the poem was quite dark.  I think that the author used the rhyming to make the poem seem happy but when you read it again you realize it is about a man being poisoned under a tree.  I also think the poem was written in a joyful way because during the poem the main character was resenting the man that was poisoned.  In the last line he/she says that his/her friend was glad to see the friend poisoned.  I was angry with my friend;  (A) I told my wrath, my wrath did end...

Of all the texts that we've read this year, which one is your favorite, and why? Which one is your least favorite, and why? My favorite text that we read this year was definitely The Great Gatsby. I liked The Great Gatsby because it is very lively and visual. I also enjoyed the movie with all of the colors and the actors. My least favorite book was The Merchant of Venice. I disliked this book because I don't understand Shakespear. To be honest I didn't really understand the book. For me it was a very bland book. The Great Gatsby and The Merchant of Venice are two very different books. In the end I prefer The Great Gatsby.

I read a book called, Uglies, by Scott Westerfeld. It is about a society in which everyone turned “pretty” after their 16th birthday. Before they are 16 years old they are considered ugly. The two main characters are named Tally and Shay. Tally meets Shay and they become friends and they played a lot tricks. On the night before their birthdays (they had the same one) Shay asks Tally to run away to the Smoke. The Smoke is a place where people are all ugly but they live like normal people because they don't get the procedure to turn them pretty. Tally says no but later on this group called, Special Circumstances, questions Tally about Shay and tells her that she can’t turn pretty until she finds Shay with a note that only Tally can understand. Tally finds the Smoke but she ends up liking it. She lies to the people there until she feels like it’s her home.
