Prompt: In the first chapter, we found out that Thi's father Bô was not in the delivery room with Má when their children were born. What do you think about that when you read that? And by the end of the book, did you ideas shift? If so, how and why? If not, how and why not?
In the first chapter Ma says that Bo was not present for all of his children birth. For Thi's birth Bo was actually at the movie theater. When I read this I thought that this was part of their culture. Ma also seemed to be okay with this. I also feel like this might have something to do with generations. It might have been okay for Bo not to be their for his children's birth than if Travis wasn't there for his child's birth. I think that Bo and Ma's relationship had something to do with why Bo didn't come to the delivery of his children. Throughout the book my thoughts developed about Bo's absents. I believe that he was very scared for Ma and he didn't want to see her in pain but he didn't want to show it. He had a very scaring childhood and I think he might have not wanted to show his sorrow for the pain that Ma was going through because he didn't show his emotion throughout the book. One example of this would be on page 115. Bo is being abused and he doesn't show any emotion even though he thinks it.
Choose one of the poems that we have studied in your reader, and analyze the title. How does the title relate to the rest of the poem, and how does it create meaning? Provide examples from the poem to support your claims. In "This Is Just To Say" the poem there are 3 stanzas with 4 lines in each one. In the poem a person tells another person that he or she has eaten their plums. The person says that they have eaten the other persons plums, but seems to not be very sorry. I think that the title is a bit sarcastic. If the person who ate the plums didn't feel that bad about the plums, then I think that the title is saying, "sorry I ate your plums that were so delicious, I just wanted you to know I ate them." Also when the author says "forgive me they were delicious so sweet and so cold" it gives me the sense that the person isn't very sorry and is rubbing in the point that he or she ate the plums.
