Prompt: In chapter 5, when Daisy and Gatsby meet, how is weather used to create mood, and what mood(s) is created?
In chapter 5, Gatsby and Daisy meet for the first time in 5 years. In the morning, when Gatsby sends people to Nick's house to fix it up a bit, it is raining. Gatsby is nervous and scared of reuniting with Daisy. Gatsby doesn't think that it will be the same between him and Daisy. When Daisy comes to Nick’s house it is still raining. When Nick and Daisy enter the house Nick expects Gatsby to be sitting in the same place he was before. To Nick’s surprise Gatsby is gone, but he then hears a knock at the door and he finds Gatsby drenched in rain. Gatsby goes into Nick’s house with a scared attitude and his meeting was very awkward with Daisy. Nick leaves but Gatsby catches him before he can and tells him he should stay and that the meeting was a big mistake. At this point it is still raining, but when Nick comes back he finds Gatsby glowing with happiness and Daisy crying with tears of joy. Nick tells them that it has stopped raining.
The weather in chapter 5 almost seems as though it was mirroring Gatsby’s feelings. When he was scared, nervous, and wanted to take back his meeting with Daisy, it was raining. When Nick comes back with the good news that the rain has stopped Gatsby and Daisy are very happy and not so awkward.
Prompt: In the first chapter, we found out that Thi's father Bô was not in the delivery room with Má when their children were born. What do you think about that when you read that? And by the end of the book, did you ideas shift? If so, how and why? If not, how and why not? In the first chapter Ma says that Bo was not present for all of his children birth. For Thi's birth Bo was actually at the movie theater. When I read this I thought that this was part of their culture. Ma also seemed to be okay with this. I also feel like this might have something to do with generations. It might have been okay for Bo not to be their for his children's birth than if Travis wasn't there for his child's birth. I think that Bo and Ma's relationship had something to do with why Bo didn't come to the delivery of his children. Throughout the book my thoughts developed about Bo's absents. I like your analysis of this scene! I think that rain might also be a metaphor for tears, because there is multiple forms of sad weather (fog or something), but this is a good example of imagery being used to represent mood.
ReplyDeleteYour analysis of the scene was really good, and accurate, and I like how you included a summary of it before explaining what it meant. There isn't much to say about it, because I think it's pretty clear how rain usually represents sadness and sun means happiness.
ReplyDeleteI like how you paid close attention to detail during this part of the story, because I agree that the weather most definitely reflected Jays feelings and when he was nervous and scared as would any person would be in that sort of situation.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you fully. The weather was used to portray Gatsby feeling and emotions. It's crazy how much weather can impact a chapter and how much it can symbolize a cirtain situation. It has been used in movies, tv shows and even plays. Weather is used typically in order to give a cirtain situation more meaning. I also like the use of color and materials in the book to portray things like wealth. Good job on your post, it definetly shows that you know what you are talking about and understand the true meaning if weather in this book.

ReplyDeleteThe weather is absolutely an analogy to Jay Gatsby's feelings and emotional expressions presented in chapter 5. There is this direct correlation between the rain and this feeling of nervousness, sadness, and gloom and the sunlight as a feeling of happiness, content, and enjoyment which I think you describe nicely. ReplyDeleteNice post Emi. I completely agree with you, I think Fitzgerald adds in the symbolic weather, just like he adds in symbolic color, so the reader will start associating feelings and memories with colors or the weather. It also creates more depth in what he's trying to convey
